HOW TO:

Yan Shvalb was on hand to demonstrate advance keying techniques in Apple Motion. He keyed the lovely Oksana footage using techniques he's been perfecting for the last few years. He started out by correcting the DV blockiness using a channel blur, then proceeded to use the resulting alpha as a traveling matte. It was at this point that you can add your corrections, such as despill, matte choker, etc... As an added bonus, we got to see Yan fly through the rest of the compositing of the shot. Motion is looking very robust these days, definitely worth a look....

SOFTWARE DEMO :

Russ Andersson
Developer: SynthEyes Matchmoving software
Andersson Technologies LLC
http://www.ssontech.com

Russ demonstrated the new 2006 Edition of the SynthEyes camera tracking application for Windows and OS X. SynthEyes is an automatic and supervised 3-D match-moving system offering high performance and a wealth of features for an affordable $399. New features include facial and motion capture, mesh building for shadow catchers and modeling, and a flexible image preprocessor. You can match-move your first shot in under a minute, exported to most major animation and compositing packages.

SynthEyes has made its reputation solving challenging shots for projects such as Master & Commander, National Treasure, Aviator, Racing Stripes, and the new 3D IMAX project, Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D. We'll walk through some typical applications, including techniques to help fix 2-D compositing problems.

One of the coolest features Russ demoed was the ability to convert your tracking points to a 3D mesh. He then proceeded to use the mesh as a shadow catcher directly in SynthEyes. The program was blazingly fast, even on the lowly laptop he was using.

There was a $25 SynthEyes discount code for those attending the meeting, and a SynthEyes license was raffled.
